The sound and arrangements are 2002. With the newer equipment, sound generators, etc, the songs are as modern as anything anyone is doing today. The deconstruction and lies on this recording are as good as any desconstruction and lies you're going to hear anywhere. Not everyone is going to like it and that is good. The Cuckoos played, "Monk Time" retitled "Cuckoo Time." This rant is more crazy than anything I've heard recently. The Goblins played, "Oh How to Do," and it was so deconstructed, I had stop what I was doing and listen carefully. The banjo plays the organ part and made the lie complete. I loved the Graves Brothers' rendition of "I Hate You." The singer opened up the song with a hateful and insidious vocal, followed by screams from a backup chorus. I was amazed. Kelley Stoltz did the fourth cut, "Complication." Throughout the song, a berzerk sound generator does what had originally been done by the organ. (I just picked up one at a garage sale - it has interesting possibilities.) Kelley has great ideas - listen to his most recent vinyl recording "Antique Glow." Here you can hear what a chameleon he can be. I was pleased with all four interpretations of monk songs - pleasantly surprised and encouraged to believe that this music sounds better now, with younger people playing it. Listening to the new stuff by the White Stripes, the Strokes, plus a whole new wave of original material now being recorded in the garage style, I am not surprised that groups, younger than the monks, are breaking loose in new ways, using monk formats and structures. Not everyone is going to agree with me, not even some of the other monks - but then, I'm not a traditionalist. I like new sounds and new ways of doing things.
