Date: 4.28.2005 Author: Gary Vermin Magazine: Horrorwood Babble-On GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE, THE ?Ø Light ?Ø (2005 Good Forks) Gery Vermin THE GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE Light (Good Forks) Destined for immortality as soon as Quentin Tarantino gets an earful of them, The Graves Brothers Deluxe hail from Mississippi by way of New Orleans via San Francisco (best not to ask) and like Canada's The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets, are merely meat pawns for otherworldly forces beyond the comprehension of lowly mortals. Could be because I just finished spending a day roaming through the newest Thickets offering, but nothing even remotely comparable comes to mind. Members of the band have spent time performing with the likes of the Residents, Thin White Rope, the Stumpgrinders and Noel Redding - however, as I have joyfully evaded each and every one of those listening experiences, I have no clue how much on an influence their tenures bring to TGBD. Although their approach is notably darker - almost Eerie Von-ian in it's bluesy murk - than the Thickets, there is the looming pall of taking great pleasure in the nonsensical. Whether it be the song titles ("I Hear Light Coming Down", "The Flame Of The Final Inferno Is A Jive Ass Hot Plate"), mercilessly crippling Diana Ross's "You Keep Me Hangin' On" or the stellar cover artwork, these deluxified Brothers had me scratching my flaking dome more than once. Not what I consider a keeper, but likely a safe bet for anyone looking for a bit of quirk with their herky-jerk. |
