Mike Donohoe, Young Lion's Report: The monumental decisions of rock attendance

There are two shows that will battle for your attention this Wednesday, June 9. Locals Shaking Hands will be playing their first Alibi show with San Francisco's Graves Brothers Deluxe. The noise begins at 11 p.m. Also that night, at the 330, will be four bands: Virgin Suite, Scarlett Symphony, The Viewmasters and The Billy Nayer Show. Doors open at 9 p.m. Cost is $5.

When faced with a monumental decision of rock attendance, it is crucial to weigh your options and keep a keen eye on the clock.

It is quite possible to witness the meat of both shows if a systematic plan is set in place and libations are limited so as not to induce lollygagging and apathy.

Definitely show up to the 330 for a while, then if you need a change of atmosphere, head on down to the Alibi around 11:30 or so for Shaking Hands and Graves Brothers Deluxe.

GBD are a three-piece rock/punk group with enough strangeness and varied random sounds that fit well with Shaking Hands' odd and, at times, heavy, raucous staccato rock-and-fold sound. GBD have also familiarized themselves with tried-and-true rhythms and structures that provide the backbone and spring of a simplified psych-rock-econo-crunch-and roll.

Some of their songs remind me of Arizona's Meatmen, while others veer toward the spaced out and weighted blasts of bands like Subarrachnoid Space and the Residents.
