The Graves Brothers Deluxe
Gonna Happen to You
Unsafe at Any Speed

A few songs manage to channel the chill vibrations of Stoo Odom's previous stint as part of San Franciscan eclectic rockers Thin White Rope, but fans of his duties in Subarachnoid Space will wonder about the Butthole Surfers / Southern Culture / lounge noir thang going on. It's one part The Cramps. one part odd time signatures, and a vocal style that meanders from Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies) to Harry Connick Jr. from song to song. And rhythms that slide from country to reggae to lounge without finding a centre. There are high points for fans of Mr. Bungle or Zappa aching to get covered in plinking piano, wailing sax and a shattering guitar detour. The song that opens the CD, "Electrical," would have set a nice tone for the album, but by the time you get to "Calling Goodbye" in the middle of the album with its spy movie sound, you're pretty much lost. Really great musicians, doing some interesting technical moves, abandoning a cohesive sound. The jazzy instrumental "did you tell guillaume" is worth orienting themselves on and going for a soundtracky sound. That goes real nice into the intro of "Raw Stinking Beauty," but Odom's darkly whispered vocals sound more like an interlude on an industrial album. With so many competing genres alive in this CD the Graves Brothers Deluxe are going to have a hard time finding fans who follow them from song to song without wondering what is this noise on my psychedelic-rockabilly album. Mixed bag, but worth considering if you're a fan of any of these bands mentioned.
