Date: 9.9.2005 Author: Michael Toland Magazine: High Bias The Graves Brothers Deluxe - Light (Good Forks) In many ways San Francisco's Grave Brothers Deluxe seems like one of the many followers in the White Stripes' wake, with a similar style of minimalist rootsy rock informed by punk energy and arena rock dynamics. Certainly the first few songs on Light will give you that impression. But then the band gets into the strange, almost Gothic psychedelia of "Big Chain Store," the jazzy, Morphine-like "Drinking at the Sea Star," the free jazz blowout "The Flame of the Final Inferno is a Jive Ass Hot Plate" (nice nod to Mingus there) and the noisy, fucked-up take on the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On," and it's clear the Graves Brothers Deluxe inhabit their own trashy planet.
