SXSW '04 FRIDAY

The bulk of today's update comes from Jennifer Kelly, who unfortunately didn't have a camera with her, which is why the photos don't really correspond to the music. Sorry about that.

... I couldn't find the rest of Splendid's people after that, so I walked up by myself to see The Graves Brothers, a San Francisco-based trio that plays strange and wonderful jazz-leaning sleaze rock. They started off in free jazz mode, with sax/guitar player Willy the Mailman dueling with bassist Stoo Odom, temporarily switching to something that looked like a silver microphone and sounded like a kazoo on steroids. The band played a couple of songs from the new album Filter Feeders, including (I think) "And Then the Conversation Turned to Sex" and the dark and sensual mariachi cover "Munequita Negra." There was also a Diana Ross (!!) cover. The band closed out with the fast, garage version of "Raw Stinking Beauty" which has appeared in various forms on two of three Graves Brothers albums.
