The Graves Brothers Deluxe - Light
Good Forks

Two patron saints of the Rock-a-billy world, Bela Lugosi and Elvis Presley, died on, lead singer of The Graves Brothers Deluxe, Stoo Odom's birthday. Those musical and artistic spirits may just have fled the after life and deposited a bit of their magic into his body to express themselves. The sound of The Graves Brothers Deluxe is an homage to the black and white hero of Horror films and the over the top pop rock of Elvis, in a way that only Hattiesburg, Mississippi can produce. Besides the fortuitously born lead singer, Odom, the rest of the musical duties are caught by San Franciscans Willy the Mailman (guitar and sax) and Marco Villalobos (Drums and Vocals).

Light brings The Graves Brothers Deluxe to darker territory than "Cruzando la Pinche Fontera" (7" from Munster). The darkness emanates both from the baritone vocals of Odom and the laid back, creeping, tempos on all the cuts. "About the Future" starts off the ten track fall six feet into rock depths. The horn infused, roots rock pulsar moves behind a postulation about, of course, the future. From the "Fucking and Fornicating" all night in "About the Future" to the trippy, quick thumper "I Hear Light Coming Down" expresses the synesthisia of hearing light. Odom pulls out a wriggle in his voice and Mailman's guitar drives harder and deeper than ever on these two cuts. The Graves Brothers have produced a damn fine album, full of driving rock beats, vivid dark images and a sound that drives the mind and pelvis.
