Date: 9.1.1998 Author: Tim Scanlin Magazine: SnackCake! Grave Brothers Deluxe ?¨Shotgun Silence?Æ b/w ?¨Dirty Blue?Æ Lather San Francisco??s Grave Bros. Deluxe includes singer/bassist Stoo Odom and lead guitarist Roger Kunkel, both ex-members of one of the greatest, most criminally neglected American bands of all time, Davis, California??s Thin White Rope. While it??s true that Odom signed on just in time to witness that band heaving it??s last breath, Kunkel ?± along with singer/guitarist (and totally MIA) Guy Keyser ?± was one of Thin White Rope??s founders and half of its devastating guitar attack. Given this pedigree, imagine my surprise at hearing the A-side??s complete lack of ethereal, country-tinged grinding. What we do get is Odom singing a straight-ahead rocker that resembles the quirky late-70s proto-punk of NYC rockers like The Voidoids. Odom proves himself to be a feisty frontman in his own right, delivering lines with just enough punch to match the propulsive music. ?¨Dirty Blue?Æ is the pay-off that Thin White Rope fans (ahem) will look for. Odom??s bassline positively slithers around the steady, surfy drumming of Bruce Todd, while Kunkel works his six-string magic, concocting stinging lines, just like in the days of yore. Odom??s baritone comes across loud and clear. All told, the effect is something resembling ?¨Endless Sea?Æ?±era Iggy Pop, and that, my friends, is high praise. Tim Scanlin |
