Broken Horse, who once backed Paula Frazer as one incarnation of Tarnation, celebrated their 10th year of complete obscurity by treating the packed house at the Hotel Utah to some vibrato-laden, spooky, Arizona desert rock of the David Lynch-soundtrack variety some Thursdays ago. Also on that bill were Graves Brothers Deluxe, feauturing that Amr guy from 7th Betty and Stoo from Dart, and they kick a healthy portion of butt. Sometimes it??s too arty and sometimes the dueling dissonance falls short of that neat-o, ?¨Wow, that shouldn??t work but it does?Æ effect, but when all that tinkering and swirl locked up at the Utah, the result was bloddy great. Slow building dirge numbers, (get stoned, then try and picture CCR as interpreted by Sonic Youth) emerged from walls of guitar fuzz and strange circular leads melted into square progressions, all charged with recklessness and a lurking sense of pop smarts. It takes a few songs to get what GBD are trying to do but when you do, you??ll be glad you did. Greg Heller
